dartWrite

dartWrite is a Scene based novel writing software. It's currently in early development, with a beta release to the public soon. There is still a long way to go until it's ready. But I wanted to let you know this is coming, and get feedback and your wishes and thoughts. I'm currently running and collating that sort of thing on the Discord support thread for the application. Please go there if you have any ideas, or features you'd like to see in the application. I'm using demScribble as a basic framework but it's Scene based, meaning that each scene is authored seperately, rather than Chapter based like demScribble.

Please keep checking back for news on the application, screenshots of the growing design and anything related. The Discord Group Thread is also an excellent way to stay up to date on this application.

This is a preview release, not a beta and subject to change and bugs, please use at your own discretion and take note of the disclaimer of warrenty in the license!

This dartWrite application is being maintained as both an actual entry to Scene based editing and while we sort out a few issues with the file-format for Literato, but don't worry there will be an import for this in Literato and there is an import for demScribble files in dartWrite

Updated: Various tweaks and updates, with a few fixes thrown in.

Added: Import demScribble Quick Correct Entries

Updated: Moved Import from demScribble entries to their own sub-menu on tools

Bug Fix: Removed idle actions, this seemed to make the app a little unresponsive, removing this seems to have solved that issue.  Have used an idle timer instead which on 5 sec of idle time will update the chapter counts, captions and set the focus.  But then turns itself off, and won't come on again until a new idle is started (I think).  Either way it's not spongey anymore.

Updated: New file properties dialog better in keeping with theme and style of application, and allowing room for expansion.

Added: Settings Dialog, it's fairly extensible so I can add more as it's a little sparse right now, but all the current settings are configurable in it so far, as well as a custom macro and style manager.  These styles should now be live already, but will need testing.

Updated: Moved settings menu entries into sub-menus for ease of finding them, they were starting to get crowded.

Updated: Images added to gray image list, to allow a more theme'd look over most of the application, this fits a little better but increases the size of the application a fair bit.

Updated: Various Minor Updates, and fixes/additions

Note: Note update day, total rejig of notes and how they work to make it far more like dartECTD note taking.  This seems like not much on this update file but it's a lot of work streamlined down into this entry.  This will need a lot of testing but will allow a much better note taking platform.

Added: Notes node search, at least a version one for searching notes nodes.

Updated: Ribbon, Editors now by default hides Org and Notes, the Arrow on the pane will show/hide

Updated: Ribbon, Tools will now by default hide format and scripts and sep, Arrow on pane will show/hide.

Added: New Note Actions added to SetCaptions routine to enable/disable as per current state

Added: Note Node Add Backups, and delete node backups.

Added: Spell check word on header for Notes and other Col, Row and word count on node header for selected note.

Note: Bug: Trying to make the application less spongey, so have changed all sleep commands.

Bug Fix: Scene backups were creating loads of recycle items, have fixed that

Bug Fix: Have fixed scene backup filenames to a shorter but hopefully identifying filename.

Note: Converted notes from demScribble documents are then root notes in the new note editor.

Bug Fix: Changed related/associated URL to name that fits in with the scribble format, and did the same for remarks, which in the file is summary now.

Updated: Chapter and Scene Created/Modified date/time is now properly set on chapter/scene creation.

Added: Needs testing, a lot!, but added conditional on export type scene retrieval routine, should only return those scenes that match the export type.

Updated: Character Report will now properly, I hope, report per scene, not per chapter.

Updated: Cut, copy and paste speed keys should, I hesitate to say, work for any active control that accepts short keys, and has special handling for memEdit and memNotes

Updated: Export eBook single to include new routine for returning scene content conditional to type of export, and included ctd custom routine too.

Added: Chapter Plan and Notes now active in tools pane on scene editor.

Updated: More Exports added to conditional for scenes, to match the conditional retrieval routine.

Bug Fix: Error in saving current directory on html reports

Added: Import from demScribble, Names List

Added: Move Scene to other chapter, and chapter selector dialog that returns the selected chapter GUID.  (This may be useful for other things later on).

Bug Fix: Properties Dialog doesn't crash anymore when editing properties.

Bug Fix: After converting to the new staying in memory file, well things weren't working as they should.  I've managed to track down and fix that, and now scenes load and save when clicking through as they should.

Updated: Chapter selector will allow double click to select now.

Bug Fix: Viewpoint on scenes wasn't saving properly, or loading, and now does

Updated: Drop files on scribble convert to convert multiple files automatically.

Updated: Scribble Convert keeps an MRU of seperators now with auto complete drop down.

Added: System Tray residence, and will minimize to tray.  This is for diong things like research etc and getting the main interface out of the way, reasserts the UI on restore to max.

Added: Idle action of doing all chapter counts.

Added: Main popup menu to the tray icon.

Note: Need to check out the spell check see if it still works.  - Seems okay when copied from dartECTD.  That version of the spellcheck/richedit seems to be fine.  Not perfect, will work this issue.

Updated: Various testing and some minor updates and etc.

Update: Fixed filename of scene backup files to sub-directory 'Scenes\' and included the filename part of the actual document to avoid confusion a little for each scene.  Still in ctxt, but this is actually importable via insert text, but will add an import.

Added: Noted Import To Scene from Text File including ctxt documents.  Will replace the current scene but does ask and warn.  Added to all menu's and the ribbon.

Updated: Brought Ask and Warning dialogs more in line with dark theme.

Updated: Sped up the selection timer a little.

Added: Export RAW to Editing file, this is a text file split scenes with break tag, for editing, then splitting back up with break tag when done.

Added: Import from RAW editing file, needs extensive testing but in effect is a reverse of the above, but using code from demScribble convertor so in theory should work fine.  Unless the scene count is changed in the raw file or the chapter, or the wrong chapter is used but does warn the user of these cavaets.

Added: Import RAW editing text from clipboard, with a micro editor just in case of needing editing which will split much the same as Import RAW from file.  I figured this would be useful for converting other file formats, without having to actually convert the file format, just by using the clipboard.

Updated: Unique glyphs for Import/Export and Clipboard import of RAW Editing files.

Update: Major: Converted the ini file reads and writes to happen on a single instance of the TBigIni, like demScribble, in testing was having some issues with the file being locked, this should fix that as only one copy/instance is open at a time per instance of the app.

Bug Fix: Some scene filenames had illegal characters in them, didn't think the function I was using allowed them but still didn't work and now I've made it more stern it does.  This was the original error I was thinking I was fixing with the above...but oh well

19/12/2025 - Build 1.0.0.15

Note: Testing today

Added: 10 minute scene backup to ctxt file.  This will create a lot of files, but well worth it for file security and have added ctxt to the backup manager

Updated: 15 minute back and event now changed to 30 minutes.

Bug Fix: On new error fixed on trying to access selected chapter when none existed.

Bug Fix: Not deleting a scene properly from a chapter when deleting the scene, fixed.

Bug Fix: Not switching the page to the content editor on save, this seems to be required for saving the scene content for some reason that frankly I could do without, but it appears to be necessary.

Update: Much improved flickery saving, it doesn't so much flicker on saving now, and appears to still save fine.  Copied scene saving to save event and it doesnt' double load the chapter anymore.

Bug Fix : Word Goals on chapter/scenes should save/load properly now...I think...! :)

Bug Fix: After non-flicker, chapter scenes weren't saving properly, they are now.

Bug Fix: On Creating New Chapter didn't properly save the currently editing scene.

Updated: While trying to fix one bug, introduced another - have reverted for now.

Updated: Word count per scene is shown in convertor for '.scrib' documents now.  Another debug method that seems useful to keep in.

Added: Gender field to Characters, I can't believe I forgot that one!

Added: Age field to characters, another I can't believe I forgot!

Updated: On those chapters without a selected scene instead of first it will select last, and also scroll the selected scene into view.

Updated: Themed the Calibre export wizard to match the general dark theme of the application.  (Took some doing).

Updated: Export to HTML Single updated with Replace CTD Special function.

Updated: Fixed demScribble '.scrib' convertor, checked and tested it works now.

Updated: CILON items now have proper glyph assigned to them.

Added: More conversion and details to the demScribble conversion.

Updated: Scribble convertor now uses scene tag as scene title if available elsewise it defaults to the scene count.

Updated: Scribble conversion makes better decisions about colorings of chapters to fit into the dark theme. (This is experimental).

Updated: More Chapter properties copied on conversion from '.scrib' documents

Added: On clicking into a chapter if there is no previously selected scene it attempts to use the first scene if there is one, as the selection.

Note: Checked conversion, it works better now in general, including more settings for scenes that are inherited from the old demScribble chapters, and zoom factors, colors for chapters with sensible conversions for the current dark theming etc.

BUG: Scene click sometimes does wipe content, need to check in on this bug!

Added: Up to Act's 7 in Chapter Properties, to allow anything from three-act method to 7 acts for other methodologies.

Added: Find and Find Again, very similiar to dartECTD.

Added: Search and Replace, very similiar to dartECTD.

Added: Quick Net Searches, Google, Google Image, Wikipedia, Wiktionary on selected text with short keys

Added: Arc property to scenes, defaults to the last scene's arc if there is none.

Updated: Main progress bar moved to status bar, using a nice helper I got from Co-Pilot, love that thing!  But it's now visible on which ever editor the user is working on and better fits the model.

Added: Just in case sort of field, an Arc field to scenes, that will like act, default to the last scenes act.  I think this may be useful for changing act during a chapter, and there-in correspondingly there will need to be a report.

Updated: Paste into scene editor now uses clipboard direct so as not to accidentally paste rich text, this is to keep the actual text not the unused formating.

Updated: Brought CILON glyphs inline with the theme of the editor buttons, so they match better and correspond a little more.

Updated: Various tweaks and Improvements and Fixes.

Added: Two new chart reports, using demScribble Chart Report Dialog.  Chapter Word Counts under project and Chapter Scene Counts under chapter.

Updated: Chapter Delete now properly also deletes the contained scenes, and warns of this a little better in the confirmation dialog.

Added: On Chapter Delete creates a backup before the entire deletion process for potential roll back if the user so requires it.

Added: On Scene Delete creates a backup too for rolling back if necessary.

Updated: Status Bar now shows date and time, and I've removed the modified panel, this is shown by the color of the filename and I feel this is indicator enough.  Also the glyph changes to a save icon when it is modified, this seems clear to me.  Clicking on the filename save the file, and the date/time will insert respectively.

Note: Did a lot of work on the docs today, whitepaper stuff mostly and a testing list as we're getting to that stage.  This has taken a lot of time so not a lot of actual development on this entry today.
